A head-on collision is one of the most frightening and dangerous types of car accidents that can occur. Even more frustrating for those affected, almost all of them are preventable because they most often happen because a driver is going the wrong direction when operating a vehicle. A head-on crash reportedly caused by a wrong-way driver occurred on the New York State Thruway in Seneca County early on a recent Sunday morning. As a result, two people are dead and three are in the hospital.

The accident is still under investigation as law enforcement attempts to locate witnesses to the crash. The most recent reports indicate that one of the injured parties is still in critical condition at a Syracuse hospital. The other two are at another hospital in Rochester and in stable condition.

It is not clear whether the alleged wrong-way driver is among either the injured or the dead. Authorities have not yet notified family members and so have not yet released the identities of anyone involved in the crash. There is no indication of whether alcohol or drugs were a factor.

The crash occurred in the earliest morning hours, and the preliminary investigation closed down a portion of the Thruway temporarily. Per a statement from authorities, the investigation indicated that a westbound driver in the eastbound lane crashed into two other vehicles that were traveling in the correct direction. Law enforcement is asking for anyone with information about the crash to contact the state police investigator by phone.
